Step into Paradise: Walking the Alvor Boardwalk
The Alvor Boardwalk (Passadiços de Alvor) is one of the Algarve’s most picturesque coastal walks, combining stunning seaside views with ecological preservation. Stretching from Praia dos Três Irmãos to the Ria de Alvor estuary, this wooden pathway was built in the early 2000s to protect fragile dune and wetland habitats while opening them up to visitors. Today, it offers easy access to golden beaches, lively beach bars, and peaceful nature reserves, making it a destination where conservation, leisure, and natural beauty meet.

The Alvor Boardwalk, known locally as Passadiços de Alvor, is one of the Algarve’s most scenic coastal walks. The whole broadwalk now follows the beach from Praia dos Três Irmãos to the entrance of the estuary. Most of the beach side resort and have access to the boardwalk and beach. There is also access to all the beach bars along the route. In the estuary section, there are a few covered areas with seating.
Built in the early 2000s as part of a wider conservation project, the boardwalk was designed to protect the fragile dune and wetland ecosystems around the Ria de Alvor while making the area accessible to visitors. Before its construction, much of the estuary and dune system suffered from erosion and foot traffic. Today, the raised wooden paths allow people to explore without disturbing the delicate environment.
Stretching for several kilometers, the boardwalk winds its way along sandy dunes, salt marshes, mudflats, and the estuary itself. These habitats form part of a protected nature reserve and are considered vital feeding and resting grounds for migratory birds. Ornithologists and casual visitors alike flock here to watch species such as flamingos, grey herons, spoonbills, and ospreys. In spring and autumn, the area is alive with birdlife pausing on their long journeys between Africa and northern Europe.

Beyond its ecological importance, the walk offers uninterrupted views of Alvor Beach, with its sweeping golden sands, and the pretty fishing village of Alvor. Along the way, you’ll encounter fishermen’s huts, small harbors, and vantage points perfect for photography or quiet reflection.
The boardwalk is mostly flat and accessible, making it suitable for families, wheelchair users, and casual strollers. For visitors seeking both tranquility and natural beauty, the Alvor Boardwalk provides a unique blend of history, conservation, and unforgettable scenery.
