Essential Alvor

The Beautiful Beach of Alvor
Golden sands that stretch for miles, gentle dunes meeting the sea, and a lagoon brimming with natural beauty—Praia de Alvor is where nature, charm, and relaxation all come together. Whether you’re here to soak up the sun, taste fresh grilled fish by the shore, or explore its stunning rock formations, this is a beach that truly has something for everyone.

Facilities
There are usually lifeguards on duty, and sun umbrellas and sun loungers can be hired at a daily rate. Car parks are close to the beach. Several beach restaurants offer traditional grilled fish, lamb, piri-piri chicken and other delicious foods.
The beach is popular with Portuguese holidaymakers from the north who usually arrive in the Algarve in August, but due to its size, Alvor Praia is never packed.
The Algarve is a wonderful spot for anyone who loves a great holiday, no matter their age or mobility needs. Local communities have invested considerable effort in ensuring that everyone can enjoy the region’s stunning beaches with ease and comfort.
Look out for the “Accessible Beach” flag, usually awarded each July. These beaches are set up with thoughtful features like ramps, walkways, handrails, adapted restrooms, nearby parking, and plenty of space in restaurants.
And here’s a bonus—many of them even offer amphibious wheelchairs, so taking a dip in the sea is possible for everyone.
The main beach is a favourite among windsurfers, kitesurfers, and you’ll regularly find football, frisbee and volleyball. During a recent visit we found a Thai Massage tent has popped up, they were busy when we went, so didn't get any prices, but may next time.
Praia is the Portuguese word for Beach. The main beach is a wide, fine sandy beach, Praia de Alvor is the main beach for the village. It’s the longest and the closest to the centre of town. It stretches for just over a mile, from the Alvor River estuary to Praia dos Três Irmãos (Three Brothers’ Beach, named after the three rocks heading out to sea at the east of the beach). The other beach shares the same stretch of sand, but is backed by a cliff and has a number of large rock formations. Most of Praia de Alvor is backed by dunes , and there are no rocks.
Due to Alvor's peculiar and sensitive ecology, attempts have been made to protect the surrounding area from tourist
development, which have only been partially successful. Alvor has, however, managed to retain much of its original style, with low buildings and open surroundings and the lagoon, which is a specially protected area of natural beauty.

Concession areas
There are a number of concessioned areas, where there are sun shades and sunbeds available. These are not free, the costs are around 20euro per day, but if you go to the beach after 15:00 the price drops to 15euro for the rest of the day. If you wish for a windbreaker, that's an additional 15euro.

Beach Flags
Now that Alvor Praia has an EU blue flag for safety, cleanliness and the quality of its facilities. But remember that the sea here is not the Mediterranean it's the Atlantic Ocean, which is a different and more dangerous animal.
One should be aware of the warning flags that can be seen along the beach.

Red flag: swimming banned, do not enter the water

Yellow flag: swimming not recommended.

Chequered flag: beach is temporarily unattended
