Essential Alvor

Churrasqueira
Mercado de Alvor
Another of our favourite places to eat, with simple, delicious dishes at great value.

Along with the Portuguese word for “hairdresser” (cabeleireiro), the word for “grill” (churrasqueira) is one I still struggle to pronounce — much to the amusement of my Portuguese wife and children! But pronunciation aside, this spot by the market building in the very centre of Alvor is one of our favourites.
All the food here is great and perfectly cooked, but we almost always go for the chicken (frango). One of Portugal’s top dishes is chicken piri-piri, and this is the place to try it. If spicy food isn’t your thing, don’t worry — they also serve dishes without the piri-piri kick.
Piri-piri is a traditional Portuguese hot sauce made from chillies. The name comes from the Ronga language in Mozambique, once a Portuguese colony, where piri-piri means “pepper.” Interestingly, the Romans also had a spicy sauce called pili pili, thought to have been similar.

💡 Tip: You can eat in or take away.

The restaurant itself is simple, rustic, and informal — all outdoors but covered, with wooden benches and tables. A small outside grill, mainly used for fish, adds to the authentic atmosphere. There are no reservations here; it’s walk-in only, and it can get very busy at peak times. Alongside the famous chicken, you’ll often find grilled sea bass and fresh sardines on the menu.
We love heading here in the summertime to soak up the village atmosphere and enjoy the fantastic chicken and piri-piri. If you’re after tasty food, friendly service, a taste of local life, and great value, this is the place to go.
